Department of Biological Sciences

The Biological Science Department came in existence since the inception of the University (Chitrakoot Gramodaya Vishwavidyalaya established in 1991 by M.P. Act 9). In the initial stage Biological science department has two separate department namely Department of Botany and Department of Zoology but after the recommendation of high power committee these two departments merged and started the department under the leadership of Prof. Prabha Grower. Later on, under graduate courses with various subject combinations were started in July 1992 under the leadership of Prof. A.L. Kirkire (as Dean). Intended with the teaching of basic biology courses at the beginning, The department over the period has developed expertise and courses in basic and applied fields of biology i.e. Botany, Zoology, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Wildlife Biology and Forestry.

Objectives of Department

  • Disseminate the knowledge of different aspects of biological sciences.
  • Educate and train the budding scientists of the region in various areas of biological sciences for playing active role in the development of society at the scientific, ethical, legal and socioeconomic point of view.
  • Take-up action research program on the recent trend of biological sciences i.e. EIA, Natural Resource Management, Wildlife Biology, Biological Control, HIA, Biodiversity, Ethanobotany and Remote Sensing and GIS application.
  • To develop skills in analytical thinking through problem based education. 

Faculty Profile of the Department

Dr. Ravindra Singh is an Associate Professor in Botany and Head, Department of Biological Sciences. His area of specialisation includes Plant Physiology,
Forest Ecosystem Management and Environmental Ecology. He has published more than 75 research papers. He has participated in 38 National and International Seminar/Conferences/ Workshop/Training. He has more than 27 years of research and teaching experience. Twenty Ph. D. theses have been awarded under his supervision and guidance. He got First Ranking in Research Publication in Indian Citation Index (2014).

Dr. Ravindra Singh
Dr. Ramesh Chandra Tripathi joined this university in inception and has been working as Professor in Zoology. He is also working as Director Research in MGCGV Chitrakoot. Prof. Tripathi completed his higher education and D. Phil. degree from University of Allahabad. The areas of specialisation are Biodiversity, Biological Control of Insect Pests, Biological Control of Mosquito larvae; GIS & human health. He has published 72 research papers in 20 reputed national and international journals. He also wrote a text book Biosystematics and Taxonomy in 2005. He has been honoured with the fellowship of Biocontrol Advancement, Banglore, Zoological Society of India, Scciety of Life Science, Bioved Research Society. He has been conferred Dr. S.L. Mishra Medal, Prof. J.S. Munshi Gold Medal, Raghunathi Devi Medal and Young Scientist Award. He has supervised seven Ph. D. students.
Prof. Ramesh Chandra Tripathi
Dr. Surya Kant Chaturvedi is a Professor in Zoology. He completed his higher education from University of Allahabad. His area of specialisation includes Stress Physiology, Landscape Ecology, Wild Life Biology and EIA. He has published more than 40 research papers, 02 Books and participated in more than 15 National and International Seminar/Conferences/ Workshop/Training. Prof. Chaturvedi has been honoured Fellowship of Zoological Society of India. He has more than 29 years of research and teaching experience. He has been conferred Best Director Award in 2011.
